The Top 3 Ways to Optimize your LinkedIn Profile

LinkedIn is the place to be when you are searching for your next ample opportunity. Although, you may not have realized that an optimized LinkedIn profile gets you where you need to be quicker. When you are applying to jobs- hiring managers are especially checking out your LinkedIn profile. Completely confused about what you need to do? Don’t worry, this is why I am here to explain to you precisely what you need to do!

THE BASICS

What I like to call the basics of your LinkedIn profile consists of 3 things: Your profile photo, a customized URL, and your headline.

Your profile photo is essential for your LinkedIn profile; you receive 21x more profile views WITH a photo than not having one at all. Make sure your dimensions are 200 x 200 pixels. Anything more will cause blurriness.  I like to call an appropriate picture on LinkedIn a passport-style photo. A white or black background is best, and make sure to smile!… You’ll be more likely to get hired if you do!

A customized profile URL is vital to give professionalism. When you don’t customize your LinkedIn profile, the URL is automatically going to be shown this way: linkedin.com/melissacarvalho234543y347438

Those numbers don’t look appealing on a resume and certainly don’t do justice to your profile when you promote your skills and services to hiring managers and recruiters.

Plus, you want to be found easily online, and the customization of your Linkedin URL does precisely that.

The headline is classified as your branding statement. This is great on LinkedIn because it tells everyone who you are and what you do- but it is keyword-friendly, so those searching for you via the search function and LinkedIn recruiter will be more likely to find you.

Please DO NOT use terms like Unemployed or Looking for work. If someone is trying to find you, they are most certainly not using those terms, and it doesn’t optimize your profile. Personally, it looks like desperation and unprofessionalism.

A keyword-rich headline is best. My favorite thing to do to LinkedIn profiles when optimizing them is their headline! It’s incredible seeing such a transformation.

You have 120 characters to use for your headline… use them all! (HINT: the mobile gives you about 25 characters more, glitch or not, it’s something to take advantage of!)

THE EXPERIENCE

Your experience is an integral part of LinkedIn because your job titles and experience are searchable; individuals that only have titles and no keywords are less likely to be found.

I know it may seem like a lot to “show off” your experience on your profile to the public, but isn’t it more important to be found on the platform by your next hiring manager?

You can copy and paste your experience from your resume to your LinkedIn profile. Remember that employers will look at both- so if there are differences, they will defiantly remember that, and it can ideally hinder the chance of you achieving your next opportunity.

SKILLS AND ENDORSEMENTS

Skills are a significant feature when it comes to LinkedIn. Skills match you up with opportunities you are qualified for. LinkedIn allows 50 skills on the platform—make sure to use all of them!

It is important that you use skills already on LinkedIn’s platform and not the skills you are creating. You can develop your skills if they are not there, but the problem with this is that because it’s not already in the platform, not as many people may be using that skill, so it won’t yield well with being searched.

Make sure to have a mixture of technical skills, behavioral skills, and experience for variety. LinkedIn automatically categorizes them, so you will know which is which!
