How to Job Search with Confidence
Does your job search have you feeling down in the dumps? I feel you. Emotions are something that can linger in anything, especially when you're trying to obtain a new career or opportunity.
You apply, and then you face hearing crickets. Sometimes even you lack general confidence within yourself. You end up thinking those thoughts in your head that tell you that "you’re not good enough for that role" "you don't deserve this opportunity" "you don't have XYZ skill? Why should I bother."
Trust me; you're not the only one that thinks this way, I used to too, I've conquered this feeling and so have my clients. So I'm going to tell you exactly how you can overcome this and confidently job search so you can land more responses from employers and job offers…
Find Something That Motivates You
This ideally relates to your why. We all have one. We have to think about why we started first before we figure out our motivator. Why is your reason for what you do? It drives you.
Think back to your why.
Here’s an example of mine: I was previously a recruiter. I literally spoke to THOUSANDS of job seekers, and the more I realized I wanted to help them. But the thing was… I couldn't. I wasn’t allowed to tell them why they couldn’t get hired, or what little details on their resume they could change that made all the difference. My why was to help people in the job market, feel confident, successful, and land job offers. This is why my job as a career coach dives this.
Take a moment to establish yours.
Now, we all have a driver for your why. My why allows me to help people, but the more money I make the more I can put myself out there to make an impact in the job market and help those individuals even further. Another example(s) can be children, I need to do this because I have to take care of them, I have a new home I want to save for, the flexibility to.. and the list goes on.
Don’t forget your why/your motivator, when you have a day where you feel like you hit a brick wall take a notebook and write down your motivators and you're why. Read it out loud. This will help you keep going.
Don’t do it alone
Sometimes in order to drive us forward, we need another set of eyes, or another individual standing right in our corner.
Grab a friend that can support you on your journey. Where you can share job postings with each other, discuss roles, share and celebrate successes together.
This is something I used to do all the time with friends when I was ready to obtain a new opportunity and it helped keep me excited and motivated.
Plus some friends can be the one that scolds you when you slack or show any signs of negativity.
If you don’t have anyone you can rely on then I suggest pairing up with a mentor or career coach 🙋 You can schedule a clarity call with me here
It’s important to pair up with someone that has your best interest in mind and can give you the support that you need.
Positive Speaking/Writing
This is a game-changer! At times we need to rewire our brain to remind it what we exactly want. Your brain does not know the difference between what you have and what you don’t.
This is why writing, positive speaking, meditation it’s all so powerful.
Start telling yourself in the mirror or write down:
“My dream job is out there and I am heading in the right direction to obtain it”
“I’m talented in X. The right employer will see this as a need and hire me”
“I will message 2 hiring managers/recruiters today, and in return, I will receive messages back.”
“I am qualified for the position”
“Something Wonderful will happen to me today”
There is so much more you can say or you can create your own. Develop the momentum to read this or write this down every day. You will notice internally you begin to feel happier, you feel positive and driven to continue what you are in search of.
Develop a Routine
Routines are a great thing to have, especially for job seekers. No matter where you are in your career if you’re a student, mid-level management employee, etc the thing that is the most struggle is time. Job searching is like a job itself and you want to enjoy the process and do it at the same time.
Progress no matter how much time you block is progress but here is an idea on how you can organize this for your day-to-day life. Make sure to time block it in your calendar/ write your schedule to keep yourself accountable.
Sunday- Look through to save job applications you wish to apply to (I suggest 5-6 minimum you don’t want to over save on things and mass apply to too many postings) You want to assure you are applying with care. Spend at least 2 hours making sure the postings are recent, and something that you are interested in and can do within your field.
Monday- Message 2 people (Networking) Apply to 2 jobs that were saved. Spend at least 2- 2 1/2 hours.
Tuesday-Message 2 people (Networking) Apply to 2 jobs that were saved. Spend at least 2-2 1/2 hours.
Wednesday- Browse through open jobs, look and see any news within your industry. Catch up if you need to. Spend at least 1-1 hour and a half.
Thursday-Message 2 people Apply to 1-2 jobs. Spend at least 2-2 1/2 hours.
Friday- Message 2 people, browse on Linkedin, and make more connections to message potential hiring managers and recruiters. Spend at least 1 hour.
This is a basic guideline to paint the picture for you. With 8-10 hours a day, you can have progress. Progress is also something that works for you, even if it’s 5 hours. You did it, you did something and you commited.
You created the schedule and having this laid out just helps you develop more ease in your job search process.
