3 Time Management Tips for Job Seekers

Don’t you feel like life + job searching can get so crazy sometimes? Trust me, I KNOW the feeling. There is always something to do. The time that we then spend on the job searching process feels frustrating, tedious even rewarding at times. It takes time though, so it’s defiantly not an instant process. Having the right time management skills is absolutely necessary to have the most successful and productive job search.

These tips will help you find balance whether you are currently employed and job searching or unemployed.

So let’s dive into my top 3 tips!

Develop a Schedule

A schedule is important for any job seeker today. You can be working and most of your time is nights and weekends or unemployed and hit the snooze button on your alarm clock.

You want to have a routine where your search and stick to it. The amount of time is going to be up to you. For example Sunday you search for a few jobs, then on Monday, you block out two hours of your time to apply to them. Have a routine where you are treating your job search process like a job. Some days you set up the network, other days you are reworking your resume to be fit for the jobs you are applying for.

No matter what schedule is based on your day-to-day that you stick to make sure it’s off company hours. If you are caught or if they somehow uncover this you can end up losing what you currently have.

If you need to use lunch breaks or PTO time, use them for those important times where you need to focus on applications or interviews.

Set Goals and Tasks

I live by goal setting and task creation, and I find this helps so much with organizing your job search and time.

The goals can be so simple, and it helps you with your planning. It would be as easy as “Applying to 2 job postings this week” or “Sending 5 networking messages on Tuesday”

Sometimes what we need the most is accountability, and having this is a form to help not just drive motivation but complete the goals that are set. If setting a specific date feels a little too hard to handle, then give yourself to complete it by the end of the week.

I do recommend you have your goals visible, such as consistently reminding you via calendar alerts or staring right in front of you on a post-it note.

Track Your Progress

You won’t be able to know your success if you don’t keep tabs on it right? Take an excel sheet and track the number of jobs, networking messages, and activities that relate to your job search that you have done that day/week.

This gives you a visual of exactly what you should be doing the following week, where you need to work on more and evaluate your job search process for the benefit of having the right strategy.
